Chapter

Seventeen

“Let’s get back to campus,” I say wearily. The night’s activities are fatiguing me beyond belief.

Kayden shakes his head and blinks several times. He walks over to the jorogumo, and I scowl, but then he bypasses her for the cache of bones. Slowly, he digs them out, and the resulting mountain is both impressive and disheartening.

“How many people do you think she killed?” I ask.

“How many men you mean,” Kayden says bitterly. “I don’t know. There are a ton of bones from a body that are missing. I doubt there’s even one complete skeleton here, but there are so many femurs…”

“Maybe she ate the smaller bones,” I suggest. “You know. Like cows. Don’t they eat rocks to aid with digestion?”

“No. They’re mammals. They don’t have a gizzard. You’re thinking of birds.”

“Birds, cows…” I wave my arm. “I don’t want to stay here any longer. You want to? Fine. I’ll wait outside.”

He doesn’t tarry and follows me out of the cave and up the stairs.

“Do you think she dug this herself?” he asks.

I glance over my shoulder to see him soaking in the steps embedded into the stone. He's amazed by what she built. Seriously?

Rushing ahead, I leave the den of evil behind and speed-walk away from it. Kayden’s long strides allow him to catch up to me easily, but I ignore him. Immature? Maybe, but I also don’t want to say anything right now. My emotions are all over the place, and until I can get my head on right and start to think clearly, it wouldn’t be fair. I’m liable to say something I’ll regret come the morning.

“I don’t know what happened,” Kayden says.

“We can talk later,” I say stiffly.

But he doesn’t listen. “I was walking around, trying to find… As it grew later, I started to hear some music. I couldn’t find where it was coming from. No one else seemed to hear it, but I couldn’t get it out of my head. I had to find the source, and—”

“Seriously, Kayden. I just want to get—”

“Mirella,” a smooth, familiar voice says.

I halt abruptly, and Kayden staggers into me. He’s talking like normal, but he’s still feeling lingering effects from the jorogumo, that’s for sure.

“Godfrey,” I say and nod curtly.

"I've been worried about you," the dark-haired stranger says. In his hand is the coffee cup he purchased. He notices me looking at it, and he shakes the cup. "I drank it all as I looked for you."

“Why were you looking for her?” Kayden asks. He’s almost growling.

Curiously, I eye my boyfriend. He's usually so laid-back and chill. He wasn't even this defensive with Darius. What's got him all riled up? Yes, Godfrey isn't who he appears to be, but I got away from him once. I can do it again and without Kayden's help for that matter.

“I was worried, like I said,” Godfrey says.

“If you know Mirella, you know she can handle herself,” Kayden says.

“More than you can,” I mumble.

Kayden’s shoulders slouch, and he looks away. I don’t mean to embarrass him, but I’m frustrated.
